What is Indigenous Data Sovereignty? An investigation through case studies & exploring large language models like ChatGPT In-Person / Online

This is a two-hour workshop on data ethics and indigenous data sovereignty as a part of MTEDS 23. Guest Lecturer Dr. Joseph Robertson is an enrolled member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate of the Lake Traverse Reservation in northeast South Dakota and will run this workshop.

Attendees will depart with greater knowledge of data ethics as it relates to the experience of Native American communities, as well as knowledge of relevant frameworks for indigenous data sovereignty. We will provide conceptual tools, case studies, as well as code and datasets which help to highlight the core issues from the workshop.

Some experience in R is useful but not required. Please register if you are interested as we will follow up over email with details and more events.

Note: This event is a part of MTEDS 23 and we thank NSF for partial support of this workshop (under grant 1934553) as part of the T-Tripods special research focus on Data Guarantees: Analysis of Data with Assurances of Quality, Transparency, Fairness, Privacy and Trust on any flier or publicity.
